Why This Race Matters

Think school board races are only for parents? That is exactly why too few people pay attention.

You do not need children in TISD to have a stake in this election. Backed by research, school quality and school board governance can affect jobs, property values, tax stewardship, and the long-term confidence people have in a community.

This page is meant to answer one simple question: why should the broader community care?

Quick Summary (Click to expand)

Here is the short version: this is not just about parents with kids in TISD. It is about jobs, property values, tax stewardship, and the future direction of Texarkana.

  • Stronger schools support jobs and higher wages.
  • School quality can affect home values.
  • School boards control spending that impacts taxes.
  • Low turnout lets a small group decide for everyone.
  • You do not need kids in TISD — you still live with the results.
The Short Answer

This is not just a parent issue. It is a Texarkana issue.

Many people understandably think school board races are only for parents of TISD students. But the effects reach much further. School systems can influence economic growth, career pathways, property values, long-term tax decisions, and whether families and employers see a city as stable and moving in the right direction.

Even if you do not have children in TISD, you still live with the results.

🏭

Jobs

Research suggests employers study local workforce pipelines, school quality, and whether an area shows long-term stability.

🏠

Home Values

Backed by market research, school reputation often affects housing demand and the value people see in a community.

🧾

Taxes

School boards oversee major budgets, facilities, bonds, and long-term obligations that taxpayers live under.

🏘️

Community Direction

Today’s students become tomorrow’s neighbors, coworkers, and local leaders. School culture eventually shows up in the wider city.

Low Turnout Risk

I do not want the future of this city decided by under 2.5% of voters.

There are approximately 18,700 registered voters within the TISD voting districts. In the last contested at-large race, only 425 people showed up. That means a very small share of voters can end up deciding issues that affect schools, spending, district direction, and the broader city.

When most people assume somebody else will handle local races, major decisions get left to a very narrow slice of the electorate.

Economic Growth

Strong schools can help a city compete.

Research suggests employers analyze the schools and workforce of potential areas. Affordable land and labor are not always enough to attract major companies. Businesses also want regions that can provide skilled and middle-skill workers and show signs of long-term stability.

When people search Texarkana schools or education, TISD is central to how this region is seen. That makes school quality part of the broader economic picture for Texarkana.

A Local Example

TISD can affect more than classrooms.

In a state-reviewed case involving TCI Texarkana, the school district was part of a tax-limitation agreement tied to a major industrial project. The Texas Comptroller found that limitation was a determining factor in the investment decision.

That does not mean school quality alone drove the project. It does show that school board governance can matter in major local investment and tax decisions, not just what happens inside classrooms.

Home Equity

School reputation does not stay on the campus report card.

It is backed by market research: school reputation often affects housing demand and property values. Your home is one of the greatest sources of wealth most families will ever have, and a strong local school system can help support the value people see in the area.

Even for retirees, single adults, and empty nesters, school quality can affect whether families feel confident planting roots here.

Stewardship

School boards oversee real money, real buildings, and real long-term decisions.

TISD oversees more than $96 million, and recent budget documents showed a Maintenance and Operations deficit. Boards need proper budget oversight, or taxpayers can be left with delayed upkeep, long-term obligations, and more pressure later.

I bring years of high-level governmental budget experience and hope to help provide strategic oversight.

Community Life

Schools help shape the kind of city people experience every day.

Today’s students become tomorrow’s neighbors, coworkers, and local leaders. Research also suggests strong schools can support better long-term social outcomes and a healthier community over time.

This is one reason school board races matter even to people who are long past having children in school.

Bottom Line

If you care about jobs, home values, taxes, and the future of Texarkana, this race affects you too.

Backed by research, school quality and school board governance can affect jobs, home values, taxes, and the long-term strength of a community. This page is grounded in research on school quality, local economic development, property values, school finance, and community resilience.

Local elections stay small when good people assume somebody else will handle them. This is one of the places where showing up still matters.
